About Us /
alponom is an independent alphorn association from the Basel area that has cultivated an open and unprejudiced use of the alphorn for over 25 years. Under the direction of Balthasar Streiff, the members play a repertoire consisting of traditional, modern, conceptual, and contemporary pieces and perform regularly at events of varying scope and size. This led to their latest collaboration, 'you origin,' with the internationally renowned musician and producer Stephen O'Malley, a four-part conceptual piece that is regularly performed both in Switzerland and abroad.
Musical direction alponom:
Balthasar Streiff has been intensively involved with the alphorn and Büchel for almost 40 years, driven by the vision of establishing these instruments—long defined by the tourism industry and a stereotypical, sun-drenched Switzerland—as fully-fledged instruments. Following training at the Lucerne Jazz School, the art classes of the Basel School of Design, and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Streiff has long been active on a national and international level, performing in projects such as Stimmhorn and Hornroh Modern Alphorn Quartet, as well as solo. For twelve years, Streiff taught alphorn as an elective at the Lucerne School of Art and Design. However, it has always been important to him that the alphorn's accessibility extends beyond the professional arts sector to include an interested amateur community. For over thirty years, he has shared his experience with the alphorn and Büchel in Basel and at many other locations in Switzerland and abroad.
